Seemingly moments after his triumphant collaboration with Japanese guitar drone master Hakobune, collaboration addict Pleq is back with a beautifully presented 3” CD which sees him team up with Luup, which in this case seems to just be band-leader and flautist Stelios Romaliadis rather than the 19-strong line-up he put together for recent album ‘Meadow Rituals’.

The recordings on this little CD are laden with hiss and crackle and dark ambient rumbles, over which Romaliadis drapes syrupy mystical flute melodies which melt hazily in and out of the foreground, gradually becoming more squeaky and fluttery as the industrial-ambient shudder’n’rumble intensifies, joined by squeaking, grating cello textures for a transportational and meditative piece of ambience which is ominous and industrial without losing its sense of measured calm and murky human mysticism, like the stoned mechanical horror of Decimus mixed with the fried spirituality of Orfanado.

Despite only being a 3” CD and these blink-and-you’ll-miss-it mini-formats not being well suited to slow-moving fare like this, the composition runs to just over 20 minutes and I certanly feel like it gives you enough time to get fully immersed in its heady sensuous layers. As with the Hakobune collab (although that is worlds apart in terms of the textures it uses) my circuits are fried trying to figure out how they manage to construct ambient soundscapes so complete, so satisfying. Well played, humans. Well played.
